Hello, I’m Pete, the founder and director of Build Unlimited.

My life’s journey, rooted in South Auckland’s Pukekohe, has been a dynamic adventure that shaped my love for building dream homes.

In my earlier years, I was the shy, quiet kid until the arrival of my loyal companion, Storm, a husky cross rescued after the Christchurch earthquakes. Together, we ventured into dog training, unveiling not just Storm’s spirit but also unlocking my communication skills. This experience ignited a passion for assisting others, particularly in puppy training, teaching me the value of teamwork—an ethos I carry into my work with clients and architects.

Though I initially thought I wanted to be a mechanic, my heart led me to building, following in the footsteps of the builders in my family. Starting my apprenticeship at 18, I swiftly progressed, completing architectural homes in Auckland and Waiheke Island. Taking over site management for a $3M unit development in Remuera honed my leadership skills, setting me on the path to project management and, eventually, establishing my own company.

After managing over 60 projects, I craved new experiences. Venturing to Southeast Asia and Europe, I absorbed diverse cultures and worked in hospitality and tourism in Berlin, fostering valuable communication and people skills. This global exposure taught me the importance of openness and honesty, crucial when creating dream homes that align with clients’ visions.
Scuba diving became a newfound passion during my travels, offering not just breathtaking underwater experiences but also lessons in remaining calm under pressure. It was through diving that I met my partner, Emma, and together we continue to explore the world, balancing our love for travel with our commitment to our jobs.

The challenges of 2020 brought me back to Auckland, prompting a decision to fully commit to my dream of building a company. Build Unlimited has since thrived, with achievements like being showcased in the NZCB Revere Magazine and managing a $1.6M+ commercial fitout that earned an architectural design award.

It is the only building association in New Zealand with strict entry criteria where the minimum entry requirement for all members is a recognized industry trade qualification in carpentry. Part of the process to become a member is our track record is closely assessed and monitored. NZCB membership is proof of a demonstrated history of stability and success. Revere Magazine is NZCB designed and produced to celebrate and showcase some of the most inspiring and outstanding work of their members. Produced bi-annually, members can choose to submit there projects for judging and entry, only a total of 25 entry's are chosen to be published in each edition and so it is quite an achievement to be included in this magazine.

We are Licensed Building Practitioners

Critical building work that involves the building’s structure, weather tightness and design of fire safety systems is ‘restricted building work’ (RBW). Because this work is so important, it’s only allowed to be completed by a licensed building practitioner (LBPs). Licensed Building Practitioners (LBPs) are assessed before getting a license, builders must have adequate qualifications, upskill and keep up to date with changing industry practices and regulations in order to continue to be licensed.   A licensed building practitioner (LBP) can be identified by producing their photo ID license card and by checking their details against the public register.

This is a personal choice, no matter which stage you are at, we recommend contacting us as soon as possible. Our experience has shown that the earlier we partner with our clients, the more we understand what is important to you and your vision, allowing us to provide innovative designs and accurate pricing to maintain your budget.

Licensed Building Practitioners have been assessed, ensuring they are competent to carry out Restricted Building Work, which is any building work (including design work) related to your home's structure (load-bearing framing, foundations etc ) or weathertightness (roofing, cladding, waterproofing etc). 

If you are building a new home or extending your existing home or doing a renovation that includes RBW, you are legally required to use a LBP. It is an offence for an unlicensed person to carry out or supervise restricted building work and it is also an offence to knowingly engage an unlicensed person to carry out restricted building work.

Having an experienced project manager for your project is critical to ensure your project runs smoothly and stays on schedule. Project managers are responsible for managing the building work on site, ordering materials, and organising subcontractors. They are also your point of contact, communicating with you and your architect to ensure everything comes together smoothly, all while maintaining the project schedule. 

If your project manager is not experienced, it is likely that problems will not be resolved correctly the first time, resulting in delays and the risk of your finished home not being completed to your expected standard. 

Pete, founder and managing director of Build Unlimited, has extensive experience managing projects from $25,000 bathroom renovations to a $1,500,000+ commercial refit. He provides project management for all of our clients to ensure that each project is completed on schedule to our highest standards and uses our 280+ Quality Control checklist to ensure nothing is missed along the way.

We work closely with you and your chosen architect during the design process so that we understand all the ins and outs of your project, this allows us to price your project accurately and account for all the small details that are often overlooked. 

Alongside providing full project management to ensure your project runs smoothly, we provide you with access to our industry-leading client portal providing you with full transparency over all aspects of your project including:

Building consent is legally required before starting most building work, your architect will draw up the construction plans and we will apply for building consent on your behalf so you don't have to stress about it.
