Our client desired a liveable shed conversion in Auckland, transforming an existing American-style barn into a single-bedroom home with an open-plan kitchen, dining, and lounge area. They wanted to retain the barn’s original style while creating a rustic industrial atmosphere.
To achieve this, we kept the posts and beams exposed, and polished the concrete floor. We used the high ceiling to our advantage to open up the space, with a mezzanine above the bedroom as a chill out zone and extra storage area. As the barn had a limited power supply, we added additional insulation and installed solar panels and battery storage to make the most of the barn’s all day sun, creating a low cost sustainable home. The home now has an industrial and rustic feel with its subtle references to its previous life as a farm shed.
